Investigating Best Practices within Biobanking Design, Sample Management and Across the Industry

Developments in the field of genomics have provided primary insight into the behavior and prevalence of certain diseases and cancers, yet scientific advancement remains bottlenecked. Relied on heavily in furthering genomic research, biobanks must meet the needs of biomedical researchers without violating donors’ rights.

The 5th Annual Biobanking 2011 Conference will address important points to consider and practical concerns in the field. From emergent biobanks, with a few hundred samples, to larger and national projects, researchers are looking to increase their data collection with the hope of discovering novel drug products. Regardless of their size, the challenges remain the same, including sample collection and management, implementing and managing sufficient IT systems, and the ability to remain legally and ethically compliant in an environment with continuously evolving regulations and lack of industry wide standards.

Highlights to the BioBanking 2011 program include:

  • Assess the strengths and limitations of biobanks and understand their scientific and commercial relevance
  • Developments in the regulatory framework for biobanking
  • Ethical issues including informed consent, withdrawal and ownership, confidentiality and commercialization
  • Explore implementation and biobanking expansion
  • Discover novel scientific application of data and the integrity of sample under long term storage
  • Biospecimen research to improve biobanking and enable molecular medicine
